Curriculums
Philosophy
The TsangWuGe Seven-Star Praying Mantis curriculum is structured across three stages: Glimpsing the Gate, Ascending the Hall, and Entering the Inner Chamber. Physical fitness, self-defense, and self-cultivation are pursued together — through the training of kung fu, students become better versions of themselves, and are better equipped to help others.
Goal
The first stage, Glimpsing the Gate, spans approximately two years, during which students are introduced to traditional martial arts and Seven-Star Praying Mantis. The stage is divided into two phases — Foundation Building and Glimpsing the Gate — each with its own focus and expected outcomes.
Foundation Building Phase: The primary curriculum consists of Zhan Zhuang, Chu Chui, and Fan Che. Through these sets, students come to understand the structural principles of the traditional martial arts body and establish a stable foundation. Training then progresses toward developing limb extension and coordination in motion. Basic physical conditioning — muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness — is also cultivated.
Glimpsing the Gate Phase: Eighteen Locks and Zhuo Gang form the core curriculum for entering Seven-Star Praying Mantis proper. The focus is on learning the hand methods, body methods, footwork, and force expression of Seven-Star Praying Mantis, together with their practical applications and the underlying principles of combat thinking.
After eight weeks of foundational Zhan Zhuang training, students enter the first formal set of Seven-Star Praying Mantis — Chu Chui (插捶). Chu Chui is open and expansive in its structure, with clean and fluid lines of movement that carry many of the common qualities found in typical northern Chinese fist methods. Through the practice of Chu Chui, students develop an initial physical foundation (gong ti) — a trained body capable of full limb extension and unobstructed force delivery..

Fan Che
Fan Che — the Water Wheel. The name is drawn from the mechanics of a water wheel: the way it keeps force flowing continuously, turning endlessly without cease. The set focuses on developing shoulder and back mobility alongside lower-body muscular endurance. Together with Cha Chui, Fan Che forms one of the two essential foundational sets for building the basic physical conditioning required at the start of one's training..

Shí Ba Sǔo
After Chu Chui and Fan Che have built the foundational structure and physical conditioning, students enter the first core set of Seven-Star Praying Mantis — Eighteen Locks (十八索).
One strike, one step. Move through it like an old man. Seek not speed, but steadiness. When the steps are unstable, the strikes fall into disorder. The body follows the step as it shifts; upper and lower are connected as one. From this, the force of the whole body finds its integration.

Zhúo Gang
Alongside Eighteen Locks as a core set of the system, Zhuo Gang (拙剛) formally embodies the hallmark Seven-Star Praying Mantis style of hard and soft, crisp and swift. Its hand techniques are dense and varied, its footwork transitions nimble, and its composition concise yet rigorous. It is a remarkably rare and refined set.
